Local 1825's "Support a Black Business Night Out" Closes BHM with Good Times and Gov. Bryan's Pledge

Local 1825's initiative to encourage union solidarity, boost community awareness and party with a purpose closed the last weekend of Black History Month with flying colors. "Support a Black Business Night Out," held at Paradise Bistro, Bar & Grill, was a huge success, and President Leontyne Jones said members "understood the assignment" when she petitioned them to "show up and show out."

"This couldn't have been such a great success without the input and assistance of our board, supporters and most importantly, the members of Local 1825," Jones said as the event concluded. "Our members are ambassadors for the progress of education that matters. It shows in the classroom, the community and tonight."

Complimentary cocktails, appetizers, door prizes and DJ Kash were instant draws for the crowd that filled Paradise Bistro. Notable attendees included representatives of the territory's professional, private business and governmental sectors, including AFT National Rep. George Bordenave, USVI Sports, Parks and Recreation Commissioner Cal White, Senator Steven Payne and St. Thomas-Water Island Administrator Avery Lewis, all of who were available to converse with members. But the highlight of the night was Gov. Albert Bryan, who pledged his support for Local 1825, including a better quality of life for educators.

"I want to hear about how we can help the children. You know, (the Department of) Education has $139 million to do something phenomenal. For the first time in the Virgin Islands, we can do something phenomenal. But in order to do that, we need each and every one of you," Gov. Bryan said. "And I know from the dedication and passion tonight as I sit with you and talk about our students, you know and I know that you're dedicated to that. The contract is just a statement of commitment to you."

Local 1825 plans to have more member networking events to demonstrate its commitment and the importance of community-education partnership.
